| Rubondo Island National Park (457 km2/176 sq mi) is situated on an island
in south-western Lake Victoria. Together with some
smaller island in the area, Rubondo protects precious fish breeding grounds.
The island is covered by forests, grasslands and lakeside papyrus beds. It has natural
populations of for example hippos, vervet monkeys and sitatunga (a kind of wetland antelope).
Chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus, elephants, giraffes and roan antelopes have been
introduced.

| More than 400 bird species have been recorded on the island, including storks, egrets,
herons and kingfishers. There is a high density of African fish eagles.
The game viewing in Rubondo is done by foot or by boat. Fishing for tilapia or Nile perch
is a popular activity.

Camps
Rubondo Island in the south-west corner of Lake
Victoria is a national park protecting the island and the surrounding lake.
The island has much forest and interesting animals, including many birds, some
large mammals, for example introduced elephants and chimpanzees, and butterflies.
Rubondo Island Camp is a luxury tented camp, set on the lake shore. There
are ten tents, all with ensuite bathroom and private veranda. The camp also has
a restaurant, serving much fish, a bar and a swimming pool. It is the only camp
or lodge on the island, offering quiet and relaxing surroundings. The camp offers
activities such as safari walks, boating safaris and fishing.
