| Tanzania: |
| Mahale Mountains National Park |
|
| Mahale Mountains National Park is (like its sister park
Gombe Stream) situated on the eastern shore of Lake
Tanganyika in Tanzania.
It's a hilly park, featuring mountains peaks up to 2,462 m/8,077 ft. Much of the park
is covered in miombo woodland, but there are also forests, mountain forests and bamboo
forests.
The eastern and drier part has some classic safari wildlife, such as lions, giraffes,
elephants, wild dogs and roan antelopes.
|
|
|
| Red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and red colobus may be seen in the forests, while
black-faced vervet monkeys and baboons, like the chimpanzees, are found both in forests
and in less densely vegetated and drier areas. Black and white colobus may be seen in
the mountain forests.
Lodges and camps
There are two camps/lodges, a camping site and bandas in the park. The camps/lodges are often referred
to as luxury, but the standard is not really luxury, rather a fairly good standard seen in many good camps.
Much of the true luxury is the remoteness and the beautiful location; the camp/lodge on the beach in front
of a deep forest, and the Mahale Mountains for a backdrop.

Greystoke
Mahale (formerly Zoe's Camp) is a good lodge on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, a little bit south
of Nkungwe. It has an overall exotic atmosphere. There are six bungalows with ensuite bathrooms
and verandas facing the lake, a central restaurant building, and lounging areas. The lodge offers
chimpanzee tracking, canoeing, dhow tours, walks, fishing, swimming and snorkelling. You normally
need to book this lodge a very long time before travelling.
