| Getting there Mara Intrepids is situated on
the northern border of Masai Mara, some 6 hours from Nairobi
by road. Lake Naivasha, Hell's
Gate and Mount Longonot
are en route. | |
| | |
| The lodge is next to the Olkiombo airstrip, which is
served by scheduled flights from Nairobi every day. The flying time
is one hour, but the plane may land at other airstrips en route, so
the actual time spent on the plane may be longer. | |
| | |
| In Nairobi, safari flights depart from and arrive in
Wilson Airport (WIL/HKNW), not Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
(NBO/HKJK). The transfer time between the airports is 2030 minutes.

| Kenya: |
| Mara Intrepids |
| Masai Mara National Reserve |
|
| Mara Intrepids is a luxury tented lodge situated by the Talek River in
central Masai
Mara National Reserve in south-western Kenya.
It's in the part of the park north of the Talek River and east of the Mara River where
off-road driving is permitted.
Mara Intrepids has 30 tents lining the river, reasonably well spaced for privacy. The
tents are furnished and have wooden floors, ensuite bathrooms, and verandas with a river
view. The walking distance from some of the tents to the public areas is quite long.
|
|
|
| The lodge has platforms for game viewing overlooking the river, an open-air (i.e.
roofed but not fully walled) restaurant area, a lounge and bar area next to the river,
conference rooms, a gift shop and a swimming pool. There is also a game viewing platform/tower
facing the open savanna and the Olkiombo airstrip north of the lodge. There are e-mail,
phone and fax services. |
|
| |
| The activities offered include game drives (three drives daily, which
are mainly of interest to guests arriving by air and don't have access to a vehicle
of their own), night game drives, and cultural outings. There are also daily balloon
safaris starting at Fig Tree Camp in the same part of the
park, and an Adventurer's Club for children.
More about Masai Mara
Masai Mara (sometimes referred to as 'the Mara') is one of the prime parks in
East Africa. It is home to a great number of animals and to many different species,
including the Big
Five.
Masai Mara's main attractions may be the migration,
present in the park during August to October, and its many lions. Other classic safari
animals often seen are cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes and elephants. The birding
is good, and many birds of prey may be seen.
The Masai Mara landscape is known for its wide undulating plains, crossed by a few major
rivers. In the south, the park borders Serengeti
in Tanzania.
Masai Mara is situated in a part of Kenya dominated by the Maasai
tribe. Maasai warriors and villages may be seen en route when travelling to the park.
Most lodges and camps in the area arrange visits to such villages.
Wildlife seasons
Masai Mara offers good game viewing all year round, but you may want to avoid April
and May, which are usually wet and rainy. The prime time is August to October, when
the migration is present, adding vast herds of wildebeest and zebras to the resident
animal population.

Wildlife around the lodge
Intrepids is set by to the Talek River, where you may see hippos and crocodiles. You
may also see animals from the game viewing platform/tower. Apart from that, you shouldn't
expect to see much wildlife from the lodge grounds, as the view is blocked by riverbanks
and vegetation.
Having dinner in Mara Intrepids, we got some unexpected company when two galagos came
to raid our breadbasket. They are obviously regulars, and may be seen most nights. Also
genets may be seen after nightfall.
